The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has officially announced Professor Mary O’Kane AC as its new Independent Chair of the Board.

This appointment marks a significant transition for AEMO, as Professor O’Kane takes the helm following Mr Drew Clarke AO PSM's commendable tenure since November 2017.

Professor O’Kane, a distinguished figure in Australia's scientific and engineering communities, comes to AEMO with a wealth of experience in public policy, governance, and a robust portfolio in various sectors including research, engineering, ICT, and energy.

Her leadership is expected to be instrumental as AEMO navigates the complexities of planning the energy transition towards a net zero economy by 2050.

In a statement, the outgoing Chair, Mr Clarke, lauded Professor O’Kane's credentials. “Mary is one of Australia’s most eminent scientists and engineers, with deep public policy and governance experience... On behalf of the Board and staff, we welcome Mary to AEMO as we collaborate with stakeholders to plan the energy transition in line with government policies,” he said.

Daniel Westerman, AEMO's CEO, also expressed his gratitude towards Mr Clarke for his leadership and guidance, highlighting the crucial role he played in steering AEMO through numerous challenges for the benefit of Australian energy consumers.

Professor O’Kane's career is marked by her contributions to science and engineering, notably recognised in 2016 when she was made a Companion of the Order of Australia.

Her current roles include Chair of the Independent Planning Commission of NSW, Director at AEMO Services, and positions with Sydney Health Partners, Silver Chain Group, and Sydney Water. She also chairs Tasmania’s Aurora Energy since 2018.
