A push is on to make sure many Tasmanian residents do not miss out on National Broadband Network connections they had been promised.

Tasmania's Local Government Association (LGAT) has pledged to lobby federal and state governments to make sure the NBN rollout proceeds as planned, despite a strategic review being underway and recent changes to publically-accessible roll-out maps.

A motion has been passed at a recent LGAT meeting, proposed by Devonport Mayor Steve Martin, which hopes to hold government to previous promises.

Alderman Martin says without a high standard of internet connection, local businesses cannot be expected to compete in the digital age.

“Fibre to the home provides us with the tools that we need for our business people to be competitive,” he said.

“We’ve had high levels of unemployment, we've had loss of opportunity, which has been a disadvantage to our community, and this fibre to the home is a way of providing a tool which will be able to compete with mainland and overseas markets.”
