A new rule in Victoria could impact planned hydrogen projects.

The Andrews government has introduced fresh planning oversight for major hydrogen projects, raising concerns among Japanese backers of a $3 billion project in the region.

The amendment reportedly designates the planning minister as the authority for large-scale hydrogen gas production projects, potentially adding complexity to the process.

The Japanese government has allocated funding for the Hydrogen Energy Supply Chain project in Victoria, but it is contingent on milestones being met.

The Victorian government says its change will not deter investment, but rather create a clear planning pathway for renewable hydrogen projects.
