BHP has identified a worker killed at its Olympic Dam mine.

Nathan Scholz, a 25-year-old employee of Exact Mining Services, was working as a contracting partner to BHP when the fatal incident occurred on a surface access road at the South Australian mine in the early hours of Anzac Day.

The details of the accident have not been disclosed, but it is believed that Scholz may have been struck by a vehicle at the mine site.

“Our deepest sympathies are with Nathan’s family, friends and colleagues, and our primary focus is supporting them at this difficult time,” BHP said in a statement.

“We are working with South Australia Police and SafeWork SA to understand what happened and support their investigations. BHP is also conducting its own investigation.”

BHP’s Olympic Dam mine is one of Australia’s largest underground mines, featuring the fourth largest copper deposit and the largest known single deposit of uranium in the world.
