A new project seeks to harvest electricity from the lithium it mines in the Pilbara.

Pilbara Minerals and Calix Limited have unveiled plans for a pilot processing facility south of Port Hedland.

The facility is projected to churn out 3,000 tons of lithium phosphate - crucial for EV batteries - from a whopping 27,000 tons of spodumene, a lithium-laden mineral.

Powered by a fusion of renewable energy and conventional gas, the proposed mid-stream processing pilot facility is expected to push the boundaries of clean energy applications.

Calix Limited's CEO Phil Hodgson says that the technology could be entirely renewables-driven, ushering in a new era of sustainable mining practices.

Compared to conventional methods, Calix's technology claims to be 90 per cent less carbon-intensive, marking a major leap in eco-friendliness.
