The Queensland Government has welcomed the Local Government Association of Queensland’s (LGAQ) decision to back uranium mining in the State.

The LGAQ passed a resolution supporting the recommencement of uranium mining after Mount Isa Mayor, Tony McGrady, put forward a motion backing the move, which received 90 per cent of support at a meeting of mayors earlier this week.

“While there will be benefits across the state, regional councils in particular will profit from the State Government’s decision to recommence uranium mining,” Premier Campbell Newman said.

“Thousands of jobs are expected to be created which will boost the economies of those regions.”

“We are determined to do this right and get the greatest benefit possible, which is why we are establishing an implementation committee to oversee the initial stages.

“Ultimately, it is about economic prosperity for all of Queensland, from the extra jobs it will create to the continuing development and shoring up of the mining industry.

“We welcome the support of the LGAQ and commend it on its willingness to move forward for the advancement of the entire state."
