A job training program in the US is trying to counteract bias against body art, and give applicants a clean slate.

‘Removing Barriers’ is a new job training program in San Pablo, California which offers job training, financial responsibility workshops, and tattoo removal.

“The program includes removal of visible tattoos that act as barriers to an individual’s safety, employability, community re-entry and opportunity,” the San Pablo Economic Development Corporation website states.

The full program last for 14 weeks, though applicants can just sign on for discount tattoo removal alone. With the San Pablo unemployment rate at 14.4 per cent it may be the best shot to release people from joblessness.

“We truly want to shift the needle in terms of unemployment and underemployment,” says Leslay Choy, general manager of SPED,

“We are determined that people think of San Pablo as a place with a highly capable work force. “

The program has had its share of success stories, including 22-year-old Fiona Lam.

Ms Lam said she was “really excited about the future for the first time,” after having her neck tattoo removed and subsequently finding work.
