The University of Ballarat has announced the formation of a new Industry Skills Centre that is aimed at bolstering apprenticeships and traineeships in the region.

"The University has restructured its own TAFE programs this year to address the need for more trade apprentices in our region," Professor Andy Smith, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Schools and Programs), said.

"Based in existing buildings at SMB and Gillies Street, our new Industry Skills Centre will be a very important development for Ballarat and our region.

Professor Smith said the new centre will offer employer-based training and will provide key skills training in areas that are facing a critical skills shortage.

"Building and construction, engineering, automotive, hospitality, agriculture and horticulture, hairdressing and beauty therapy are just some of the many skilled occupations that will be covered by the training programs of the Industry Skills Centre,” Professor Smith said.

"In 2013, the new, Commonwealth-funded Manufacturing Technology Training Centre will be added to the Industry Skills Centre”
