Global engineering firm Sandvik has secured a significant contract, receiving $77 million for a materials handling EPC deal at an Australian coal mine.

Reports say the multi-million-dollar contract will fund the engineering, procurement, and construction of two bucket-wheel stackers/reclaimers. The machines will have a stacking capacity of 7800 tonnes per hour, combined with a reclaiming ability of 6577 tonnes per hour.

Sandvik has not announced which mine has ordered the new materials handling system.

In other moves for the international engineers, Sandvik has announced it will build a research and development centre in the massive Indian market.

The company says its new centre will produce equipment to facilitate future business development in the region. The site will expand the company’s reasonable presence in the region, enhancing the existing team of modelling and simulation experts working in the nearby city of Pune.

“We are initially especially interested in computational simulation competence, where we already have a good team in Pune. The Group R&D Center India will enable us to develop new technical concepts and opportunities that will benefit both global and local growth,” Olle Wijk, senior vice president and Head of R&D, Sandvik Group said.
