Safety issues have forced the closure of recycling facility in Canberra.

Several prohibition notices have been issued by WorkSafe ACT after an inspection of the Hume site, which uncovered problems including electrical issues, fuel and gas supply problems, missing fire extinguishers and piles of rubbles blocking safety exits.

The ABC reports that the site did not include adequate safety rails around dangerous equipment.

“It is really poor management in terms of exposing workers to those sorts of risks,” ACT Work Safety Commissioner Greg Jones said.

He said issues were identified before anyone was injured or killed.

“We are making sure that all of those issues are fixed, and they must be done appropriately to our satisfaction before they can reopen.”

Mr Jones said the plant would be closed for several days at least.

“Obviously some major remedial work needs to be done,” he said.
