About the Parks & Gardens Department
This department is part of our City Services Division, and is the operations arm responsible for the sustainable planning and management of Council's open, outdoor and natural environments including all green spaces, trees and the Geelong Botanic Gardens.

About the Role
Our Gardeners are key members of the Parks team, responsible for carrying out a number of allocated tasks and activities in order to ensure Council’s parks and open spaces are presented to the highest quality.

Two permanent full-time positions available.

Some of the key responsibilities in this role will include:

  1. Following all reasonable directions given by the Team Leader and other more senior staff in accordance with operational requirements, which may include, but is not limited to, weeding, mowing, minor tree maintenance, weed control, and minor repairs to parks assets.
  2. Contributing positively in undertaking horticultural tasks and activities.
  3. Operating and maintaining plant and equipment, which may include, but is not limited to, sprayers, hand/small ride on mowers, small tractors and related machinery, in an effective and efficient manner and in compliance with relevant laws/regulations, codes of practice and applicable directives.
  4. Assisting the Parks section in providing a customer focused service that meets the expectations of the community.
  5. Undertaking additional duties, as directed by the Team Leader, Supervisor or Maintenance Officer to assist team members in completing other projects or activities.
  6. Spraying appropriate insecticides, herbicides and fungicides to a regular or modified program as required.
  7. Working within all Council health and safety policies and wear and use personal safety equipment provided.

About You
To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • Current Victorian Driver Licence
  • Current Victorian Medium Rigid (MR) truck licence would be advantageous
  • Some experience in a similar role, or exposure to horticultural maintenance activities.
  • Experience in operating a range of plant and equipment associated with horticultural maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact courteously and professionally with ratepayers, stakeholders and community members.
  • Ability to work positively in a team environment.
  • Ability to perform manual work, including lifting of weights in accordance with relevant OH&S practices and guidelines.
