About the team
The Physical Metrology Branch leads the development, maintenance and dissemination of Australia’s peak physical measurement standards. We provide the traceability assurance that measurements made in Australia are accepted internationally. The branch is an active participant in international measurement forums. Through the delivery of a range of calibrations and other measurement services branch staff share their expertise with Australian and international stakeholders. This includes to support research, process improvements, product optimisation and better measurement practice across the economic landscape.

The National Measurement Institute's (NMI’s) Impedance Standards team is responsible for Australia’s primary standards for resistance and capacitance, supporting reliable measurements across Australia in areas such as electricity distribution, weather forecasting and climate monitoring, defence and aviation. The team develops new technologies and services to meet emerging customer requirements, and provides impedance measurement services to industry. The team also provides electrical and electronics support to other teams within the NMI.
We seek an engineer/technician to contribute to the development of new technologies and services, to provide advice in support of a safe working environment, and to provide ongoing electrical/electronic maintenance and repair of measuring instruments.

You are an experienced electrical engineer/electronics technician looking for an opportunity to develop professionally while applying your diverse skillset to practical development challenges in a service delivery environment.

You are:

• competent to interpret and apply relevant legislation, policy and procedures in support of a safe electrical working environment
• capable of working independently, under general direction
• experienced in all aspects of electronics production
• skilled in board-level trouble-shooting and repair in digital and analogue systems
• familiar with electronic design software
• able to interpret mechanical drawings, and ideally, familiar with mechanical design software
• competent with a range of mechanical workshop tools and willing to develop new skills as required
• a good communicator, able to engage effectively both verbally and written, on technical matters with stakeholders from a range backgrounds
• able to work as part of a team to deliver agreed technical and service delivery outcomes
• able to lead by example, demonstrating behaviours consistent with the NMI Values

What you will do

• Produce cutting-edge electrical and electronic measurement instruments from printed circuit board (PCB) designs, taking responsibility for component specification, board manufacture and loading as well as mechanical design, construction and completion.
• Produce PCB designs from schematic diagrams.
• Design bespoke electrical/electronic circuits.
• Maintain and repair electrical and electronic measuring instruments and systems.
• Provide expertise and technical knowledge across a range of programs and activities, providing accurate, specialised advice.
• Act as an electrical safety officer responsible for assessing and advising on the nature of electrical risks arising from activities within the Branch. This includes the controls necessary to eliminate or minimise those risks, the extent of compliance with NMI procedures, relevant legislation, and Australian Standards and Codes of Practice.
