The Role
As the Specialist Ships Systems Program Office (SPO) Principal Engineer you will provide engineering leadership and direction within an integrated workforce to support program objectives for effective delivery of sustainment for the SPO platforms and supporting systems. You will support the SPO Director in establishing and maintaining engineering processes and instructions for SPO. You will have knowledge of and ensure compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements.

As the Principal Engineer for a SPO you will exercise a significant degree of independence and perform an important leadership role. You will be responsible for influencing and developing strategies, policies, priorities and operational practices in support of Defence objectives based on high level decision making and judgement. You will provide strategic advice to senior management and stakeholders as well as leading and assuming accountability for very complex work or work programs that have strategic, political or operational significance.

We are seeking candidates to fill Principal Engineer positions within Patrol Boat SPO (Darwin), and Pacific Patrol Boat SPO (Cairns). A merit list will be established for possible additional positions.

About our Team
The Australian Government is laying the foundations for a nationwide naval shipbuilding and sustainment enterprise to support implementation of the Naval Shipbuilding Plan. The Team will work collaboratively with Defence and industry partners in the transition of the several ships types into service and provide through-life sustainment. We are seeking a highly experienced candidate with extensive knowledge of engineering methodologies, systems and procedures, preferably in a maritime environment, with the ability to translate this into strategy. Providing specialist and professional expertise, you will initiate, establish and maintain strong relationships with a network of stakeholders internally and externally, and have the ability to recognise shared agendas, working toward mutually beneficial outcomes.

With people management responsibilities you will be required to exercise your people management skills and knowledge to lead a high performing and cohesive team. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing technical authority and design acceptance.
  • Implementing and ensuring compliance with technical regulations, legislation, policy, procedure and practice.
  • Planning, leading, developing, integrating, managing and evaluating projects and engineering management systems to deliver engineering aspects of the Defence materiel capability life cycle; and
  • Analysis and reporting on engineering risks, issues and requirements.
