The Role

The APS6 Senior Technical Assessor is part of a team of technical experts responsible for managing technical analysis for Defence export controls and representing Australia's interests in the multilateral export control regimes. The key duties of the role include assessing the control status of military and dual-use strategic goods against the applicable legislative instrument (the Defence and Strategic Goods List). Strong research and analytical skills are important for the day-to-day work in this role.

A significant priority for Technical Assessors is relationship building with industry, the university and research sector, and other key international and national government agencies. This includes conducting outreach and training, and providing advice on goods and technologies that are critical to Australia's defence capability.

About our Team

The Defence Export Controls Branch (DEC) plays a key role in protecting national defence capability, contributing to Australian counter-proliferation efforts, and supporting Australian industry through the timely consideration of export permits. DEC manages Australia's export control system, through which it assesses whether or not military and dual-use goods and technologies, as specified in the Defence and Strategic Goods List, may be exported to particular destinations.

The Technical Assessment Directorates role includes assessing the control status of goods and technology, identifying new and emerging technology significant to defence and national security, and developing and assessing control proposals for the multilateral export control regimes: The Australia Group, Nuclear Suppliers Group, Missile Technology Control Regime and Wassenaar Arrangement. Effective export controls rely heavily on strong and effective relationships between DEC and the industry and research sectors that export military and dual-use goods and technologies.

Our Ideal Candidate
The successful applicant will be able to effectively build and sustain relationships with a range of stakeholders, provide expert technical advice in the export control context, and contribute to identifying and safeguarding emerging and innovative technology with conventional military and weapons of mass destruction capability application. The successful applicant will demonstrate excellent judgement and problem solving skills, strong communication and influencing skills, initiative, and the ability to deliver quality outcomes in a timely manner.

Undergraduate qualifications in aerospace/aeronautical, mechanical/mechatronic, electrical/electronic, systems engineering, physics, or related fields are required for this role. Demonstrated subject matter expertise, engineering experience and/or research experience in the above fields is highly desirable.

Experience working in Defence or national security agencies, defence industry or research organisations/academia would be an advantage. Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant technical or scientific field would also be an advantage.

Although a Negative Vetting 2 security clearance is ultimately required for this role, the successful applicant can commence work with a Baseline clearance.
