The Role
DST Group has a Systems Engineer and Integration Specialist position available within Research Engineering (RE), an advanced engineering branch of Research Services Division that is responsible for the development of engineering solutions in support of Defence Research.

The Systems Engineer and Integration Specialist works within a team of scientific, engineering, technical, and project management/support staff. They are involved in the development of hypersonic Flight Test Vehicles (FTVs) through all project phases including analysis and design, manufacture, integration, ground testing and trial execution. The role performs a coordination and management function across these project phases such that the primary objective of ensuring a fit-for-purpose experimental vehicle is ready for flight trial in accordance with project timelines is achieved.

Position Duties:

  1. Accountable for completion of FTV development, manufacturing and testing activities within associated project timelines and quality/performance requirements.
  2. Accountable for coordinating and managing engineering and technical resources assigned to FTV activities, and setting and de-conflicting associated priorities.
  3. Ensure that quality project outcomes are achieved and that associated reporting and communication on progress/risks/delays/challenges is made promptly and is tailored to the target audience.
  4. Maintain currency in the systems engineering field and apply these skills to FTV related development, manufacturing and testing activities.
  5. Display scientific leadership and management of research and development activities in relation to FTV experimental functionality and technical and/or schedule constraints.
  6. Explain and communicate considerably complex information in relation to FTV development, manufacturing and testing activities.
  7. Apply specialist scientific and engineering knowledge, skills and techniques in the systems and mechanical or electronic engineering fields to FTV development, manufacturing and testing activities.
  8. Work collaboratively and lead team members to define and solve problems encountered during FTV development, manufacturing and testing activities.
  9. Build and sustain positive relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
  10. Show sound judgement and effective evaluation methods in determining courses of action to achieve FTV related systems engineering outcomes.
  11. Take the initiative to progress work to meet the objectives of FTV development and experimental programs including preparedness to work ‘hands-on’ as required in contributing to task completion.

Research Engineering (RE) branch provides integrated, multi-disciplined, leading edge, rapid response and innovative scientific engineering capability to the Defence S&T program. RE is dedicated to collaborating closely with DSTG researchers while providing valuable support to Defence and National Security operations and provides capabilities across six functional areas: Electronic and Software Engineering; Electronic Fabrication; Micro and Nano Engineering; Mechanical Fabrication; Mechanical Engineering; and Scientific Applied Imaging. Certified to the IOS9001 Quality Management System, RE provides consistent fit for purpose engineering solutions and the application of best business practices.

Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for people who are genuinely interested in the opportunity provided; taking ownership of FTV development, manufacturing and testing activities and seeing a flight test campaign from design through to a successful field trial. We are looking for individuals who can become the leading authority in their domain. They will have an interest in producing high quality work, and seek to continually improve and broaden their skills.

Our ideal candidates will be willing to work within an integrated and multi-disciplinary team, and will be adaptable to changing requirements that occur within a research environment. They will have good communication skills, both written and verbal, and be capable of communicating complex technical information succinctly.

A combination of the following prior experience would also be advantageous:

  • Review and approval of technical work and leading complex activities undertaken by integrated teams;
  • Systems engineering within an aerospace or research and development setting;
  • Technical program/project management including schedule and resource management;
  • Specialist technical knowledge in either mechanical engineering or electronic engineering.
