Your Role:

As the Offshore Patrol Vessel Systems Program Office (OPVSPO) Chief Engineer you will provide engineering leadership and direction within an integrated workforce to support program objectives for effective delivery of sustainment for the OPV platform and supporting systems. You will initially support the OPVSPO Director in establishing engineering processes and instructions for the newly established business unit. You will have knowledge of and ensure compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements.

As Chief Engineer for the newly established OPVSPO you will exercise a significant degree of independence and perform an important leadership role. You will be responsible for influencing and developing strategies, policies, priorities and operational practices in support of Defence objectives based on high level decision making and judgement. You will provide strategic advice to senior management and stakeholders as well as leading and assuming accountability for very complex work or work programs that have strategic, political or operational significance.

Our Ideal Candidate:

We are seeking a highly experienced candidate with extensive knowledge of engineering methodologies, systems and procedures, preferably in a maritime environment, with the ability to translate this into strategy. Providing specialist and professional expertise, you will initiate, establish and maintain strong relationships with a network of stakeholders internally and externally, and have the ability to recognise shared agendas, working toward mutually beneficial outcomes.

With people management responsibilities you will be required to exercise your people management skills and knowledge to lead a high performing and cohesive team. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • providing technical authority and design acceptance;
  • implementing and ensuring compliance with technical regulations, legislation, policy, procedure and practice;
  • planning, leading, developing, integrating, managing and evaluating projects and engineering management systems to deliver engineering aspects of the Defence materiel capability life cycle; and
  • analysis and reporting on engineering risks, issues and requirements.

Our Team

The Australian Government is laying the foundations for a nationwide naval shipbuilding and sustainment enterprise to support implementation of the Naval Shipbuilding Plan. The Team will work collaboratively with Defence and industry partners to establish the new OPVSPO business unit to transition of the OPVs into service and provide through-life sustainment.
