The Role

As a member of a multi-disciplinary engineering team, you will perform technical and engineering work in support of Collins Class submarines. You will be providing advice on the introduction of design changes, maintenance issues, and conducting technical investigations. Under professional supervision, you will perform engineering work of a complex and/or critical nature.

You will engage with stakeholders across Defence organisations and industry, investigate electrical/electronic engineering concepts, and develop and review specifications in support of the Defence materiel capability lifecycle. You will exercise both initiative and judgement in the application of practices and procedures. The engineer is required to provide electrical/electronic engineering technical and professional advice in relation to complex work and contribute to planning, project management and policy development.

The positions are required to support wide-ranging electrical/electronic systems, including:

Submarine Combat Systems

  • Communications systems
  • SONAR systems
  • Electronic warfare systems
  • Optronics systems
  • Weapons systems

Submarine Platform Electrical Systems

  • Power generation, conversion and distribution for maritime vessels
  • High capacity storage batteries
  • AC and DC motors and controllers
  • Electric cables and protection systems
  • Control systems.

Across these systems, you will develop analysis reports, perform reviews of submarine design documentation and develop recommendations to support decision-making, milestone reviews, and government approvals. You will investigate and maintain records of program and technical risk, capability assurance, and make submissions to hazard logs and enterprise risk registers.

The engineer will work independently with the opportunity for reasonable autonomy and accountability for the achievement of outcomes of their work. You will contribute to building team capability through coaching, feedback and developing the quality of work undertaken by others within the work unit. Professional development opportunities such as post-graduate study and secondments to industry and other areas of Defence are encouraged in order to promote career growth.

About our Team

The Collins Submarine Program within CASG is responsible for the maintenance and programmed upgrade of Australia’s Collins Class submarines. The Program works in partnership with the Royal Australian Navy and Industry to deliver the strategic submarine capability.

The Collins Submarine Engineering organisation undertakes design acceptance and assurance activities across all aspects of engineering as applicable to the Collins Class submarines and their support systems. The organisation assures Seaworthiness obligations across the Collins Authorised Material Seaworthiness Delivery Organisation. The Electrical / Combat Systems section has responsibilities and accountabilities across the aforementioned systems, and works closely in partnership with Defence industry to ensure that Navy has an enduring and potent Submarine capability.

Our Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated Electrical/Electronics Engineer with a minimum three to five years’ experience in a professional engineering environment. Direct experience with submarine systems is not essential but is preferred. The right engineer will demonstrate the flexibility and agility to respond effectively to the shifting priorities and challenges of the Collins Submarine Program.

You will have sound decision-making and judgement skills, excellent communication and stakeholder engagement including the ability to communicate with influence. You will have the ability to build and sustain positive relationships with team members and industry. You will be accountable to set work priorities, providing clear and consistent communication, motivate team members, and actively lead group activities whilst working in a busy Defence environment.

The candidate will be able to demonstrate and apply technical knowledge and experience to develop and review design packages, identify risks and uncertainties and consider these in planning, decision-making and priority setting. You will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.
