SEM Laboratory Technician (part-time)

We are currently seeking a motivated SEM Laboratory Technician. In this diverse role, you will prepare samples and analyse them using a scanning electron microscope coupled with an emission dispersive spectroscopy analyser and optical microscopy. As the successful applicant, you will also ensure the equipment required for these tasks is maintained in an operational condition and assist staff in the use and maintenance of a broad range of analytical equipment.

This position is offered on a part-time basis with the successful applicant completing 58.8 hours per fortnight (0.8 FTE). Hours and days will be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Your duties will include

  • Undertaking day-to-day management of the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Laboratory to ensure that the SEM and associated equipment is maintained in operational order.
  • Under guidance, undertaking preparation and analysis of samples using the SEM including the cutting, mounting, grinding and polishing of metal sample specimens as required.
  • Analysing gas samples using GC-MS.
  • Assisting in the testing of solar panels in the PV Performance Laboratory for commercial and internal clients.
  • Assisting in the maintenance and using other laboratory equipment, including provision of technical support to other laboratories, ordering laboratory consumables and reagents, cleaning/maintaining the Newcastle BRSN station.

Location: Newcastle, NSW
Salary: AU$62k - AU$79k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need

  • A relevant trade certificate/diploma/bachelor’s degree or relevant work experience in Metallurgy, Metallography, Materials Science or related disciplines.
  • At least 12 months’ experience in preparation of samples for and analysis using an SEM coupled with an understanding of methods for cutting, mounting, polishing and/or etching of metallic samples.
  • Demonstrated capability to perform precise and reproducible laboratory work.
  • A commitment to maintaining a safe laboratory environment.
  • A history of professional and respectful behaviours and attitudes in a collaborative environment including the ability to work effectively as part of a team, and carry out tasks under general direction from Scientific Researchers.
