About the opportunity 

This position forms part of the Research portfolio team in Faculty of Health Sciences and together with other technical officers you will provide a range of practical ‘maker’ hardware and mechanical fabrication skills to support Faculty researchers.

The role is a part-time opportunity (0.5 FTE), which entails designing and constructing research hardware from a wide range of drawings (detailed and sketch) using standard fabrication workshop tools (including a small lathe/milling machine, 3D printers and a benchtop CNC cutter). All work must to be completed in accordance with workshop best practice and undergo complete dimensional and quality checks to ensure compliance to the supplied specifications. Hardware maintenance also forms part of the role as some non-service contract research hardware requires ongoing support.

A large part of the role will be the ongoing efficient organisation and operation of the fabrication workshop area. This includes workshop access control, ensuring safe work practices of other workshop users and performing regular equipment maintenance and repairs such that the workshop is always fully operational.

Overall safety is key for this role and the incumbent will ensure that the workshop is compliant with Workplace Health and Safety (WHS, perform regular risk assessments and ensure that safe work procedures (SWPs), safe operating procedures (SOPs) and technical notes are in place for all equipment and apparatus across the laboratory facilities and preparation areas.

Lastly the Technical Officer is required to work independently with broad direction from the Manager. This role works in close collaboration with senior academics, researchers and the technical officer team to ensure that the fabrication workshop services are delivered effectively.

  • appropriate professional qualifications such as a diploma in engineering – technical and relevant experience in related field or an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience
  • demonstrated experience and a practical ‘maker’ skillset to design and construct specialised research mechanical hardware is essential
  • demonstrated ability to provide technical services and support to a large group of internal stakeholders
  • demonstrated ability and experience with the safe and effective use and maintenance of mechanical/ fabrication workshop equipment and scientific laboratory equipment (mechanical and electrical) and associated software packages
  • an aptitude for hands-on tasks and demonstrated capacity to learn new skills
  • knowledge of Australian Standards, Codes and Regulations relevant to fabrication and modification in a laboratory environment
  • knowledge of, and experience in applying, and a willingness to embrace WHS principles in a workshop setting

The successful candidate will be able to organise and prioritise their workload within a busy and demanding environment whilst working to set deadlines. A strong track record of cooperation and collaboration together with excellent interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills are also key for this role.

The Faculty of Health Sciences is the largest health sciences faculty in Australia consisting of seven disciplines, five research groups and three research centres. This position forms part of the Research portfolio team and together with other technical officers provides a range of services to support Faculty researchers; including assistance with hardware design, software design, system integration and deployment, and equipment repair and maintenance.
