The Australian Industry Group (AI Group) has lent its voice to the increasingly clamour calling for the scrapping of the Building Cod 2013, citing ‘numerous interpretation and application problem which have come to light’.

Ai Group’s Chief Executive, Innes Willox, said that the complete lack of industry consultation during its development rendered the code burdensome and called for its disallowance by the Senate.

"The Code was not discussed with industry before it was made as a legislative instrument in late January with effect from 1 February 2013. This is despite the fact that the Code has a potential major impact on construction industry contractors,” Mr Willox said.

"The Code also appears aimed at frustrating the operation of the Victorian Government's construction industry industrial relations guidelines and similar guidelines which are being developed in New South Wales.

"We urge the Australian Government to withdraw the Building Code 2013 and consult with industry on the terms of an appropriate Code or set of Guidelines. If this does not occur then the Senate should support the Opposition's disallowance motion.”
